What is a Swedish Warmblood?

The Swedish Warmblood is a European origin horse that is bred for the purpose of sport, rather than work or racing.  It has been bred from the beginning as a riding horse, rather than evolving into riding from driving or working.  It is an elegant horse with a long muscular neck, that stands 16-17+ hands.  They have large, expressive gaits; a willing temperament, and the versatility for a wide array of riding disciplines.

How is the Swedish Warmblood different from the other warmblood breeds?

The Swedish Warmblood is the only warmblood breed that has been bred specifically for riding for over four centuries.  Other warmblood breeds can be traced back to origins of working and/or driving horses.  Due to the long Swedish tradition of breeding riding horses, the SWB has exceptional, rhythmic gaits; superior ride ability and temperament, high intelligence, and exceptional athleticism.

What disciplines do Swedish Warmbloods excel at?

Because of the excellent breeding practices in place for the Swedish Warmblood, they are very versatile and excel at many disciplines.  They excel at dressage, having the mind and the movement for the sport.  They also excel at jumping, with some individuals competing in both disciplines successfully.  You will also see Swedish Warmbloods winning at Combined Driving.

Are SWBs "hotter" than other warmblood breeds?

The Swedish Warmblood includes infusions from a variety of other breeds such as Shagya Arabian, Thoroughbred, and Trakhener, just to mention a few.  As is the case with any breed, there are some lines that are more sensitive than others.  There are a wide range of riding types -- dull or sensitive.  Riders must find the horse that matches their riding style and skill.

How long does it take for a SWB to mature?

Swedish Warmbloods mature very slowly.  The full growing cycle may not be complete until the age of seven.  Many owners and breeders have seen their horses add an inch or more to their height between the ages of 5 and 7.  Young horses are brought along slowly, starting them at age 3, and beginning serious schooling at age four.
